Canterbury liquor store baron Harjit Singh sells half his empire

Singh said the sell down was the start of winding up his liquor business, and he would consider his options next year for the six he retained.

Canterbury liquor retailer and director to pay $125,000 for worker exploitation

The Employment Relations Authority ordered Nekita Enterprises Limited, a business that operated a number of bottle stores across Canterbury, to pay $90,000 in penalties for breaching employment laws.
Its director, Harjit Singh has to personally pay a further $35,000 as a person responsible for the breaches.
The penalties are in addition to $21,390 that Nekita Enterprises has already paid out to four former employees in outstanding minimum wage and holiday pay entitlements.
Nekita Enterprises was established in 2002 and operated various bottle stores, including ten Super Liquor franchises. The business came to the attention of the Labour Inspectorate when a former employee contacted the Inspectorate alleging the employer paid less than the minimum wage and failed to keep accurate employment records. ....

Auckland bottle store fined $46,000 for breaching worker's rights

An Auckland bottle store has been fined $18,000 for breaching a migrant worker s rights.
The employee had to work six days a week and often do unpaid 12-hour shifts.
The Employment Relations Authority also ordered Super Liquor Papatoetoe, or Basra and Khella Limited, to pay more than $28,000 in arrears to the former worker.
Because the company s sole director Ravindra Basra kept poor records, the authority relied on the worker s public transport records, time-stamped photographs and purchase receipts from neighbouring businesses to prove his claims.
The breaches happened in 2017 and 2018, and the authority said Super Liquor had since taken steps to improve its compliance with employment standards. ....

A South Auckland liquor store owner has been ordered to pay over $46,000 after exploiting a migrant worker.

Basra and Khella Limited, trading as Super Liquor Papatoetoe, was ordered by the Employment Relations Authority to pay $18,000 in penalties and more than $28,000 in arrears to the former worker.
The breaches include more than $25,000 in unpaid wages, and more than $3,000 in unpaid holidays and leave allowances.
The worker was commuting six days a week from the North Shore to the Papatoetoe store for work, where shifts would regularly go for 12 hours and were often not paid in full. ....
