Casteism in India and racism in the USA are a disgrace to human dignity and impediment to progress. Both are products of twisted minds justifying every form of oppression and violence to seek and sustain power and wealth. Great men and women of vision and compassion fought against such prejudice, empowered the weak, and showed humanity a path of hope. It’s easy to spend hours down the rabbit holes of the internet, particularly social media apps where algorithm-curated content is filtered just for you. And, some nights after work, I’ll scroll for upwards of an hour on TikTok, a platform I joined in search of foolishness, high-quality sarcasm, and dark humor. As the app got to know me, I was soon being fed astrology skits, cleaning hacks and detailed historical information about racism in America.
The last one was a bit shocking since TikTok broadly offers up viral dances or “put a finger down” challenges, and is generally perceived to be, as one colleague put it, an app for “teenage nonsense.” But the historical video segments were substantive and fascinating.

Every year March 8 is celebrated as International Womenâs Day. There are hundreds of events all over the globe celebrating womenâs social, economic, and political contributions as well as educational and thoughtful dialogues about the prevalence and persistence of gender inequality in the world.
The International Womenâs Day event co-hosted by United India Association of New England (UIANE), Saheli, Women Who Win #Dreamcatchers and the Asian American Commission of Massachusetts, on March 6th was both a celebration of achievements of South Asian women and a discussion about the challenges that still remain for women to achieve gender equality.
