COVID concerns cancel 7th Inning Stretch festival for 2021

The fate of this year’s American Legion World Series remains to be determined, but organizers have decided to cancel the popular 7th Inning Stretch Festival that is held each year in Shelby in connection with the tournament. 
“After much consideration, the American Legion World Series organizers have decided to cancel the 2021 7th Inning Stretch Festival,” read a statement from the American Legion National Headquarters. 
The festival, which features a 5K, Little Miss ALWS Pageant, booths, food, games and music including a well-known headliner, was created when the American Legion World Series made Shelby its home. 
It gives players, their families and locals a chance to let down their hair and celebrate summer.  ....

Students compete in state oratorical contest held in Shelby

Shelby American Legion Post 82 Family hosted the 83rd annual State Oratorical Finals competition at the LeGrand Center Sunday.
Four contestants, all winners from their particular regions throughout the state, included Savannah McGlothlin, a sophomore at Burns High, participated. She advanced through local, district, and division competitions to the state finals. The title of Savannah s oration was What Compromise Means to the Constitution.
At Sunday s contest, she was awarded second place, along with a $2,500 scholarship. Other contestants included Emma Hall, who represented Apex American Legion Post 124. Emma took first place in the contest and received a $7,500 scholarship. ....
