The Georgia Department of Public Health reported1,185 new COVID-19 cases Saturday to bring the total to 866,978. The state reported 34 deathsfor a total of 17,214 since the pandemic began. Richmond County reporter 43 cases for 19,580 while Columbia County had 22 for 10,916. Burke County reported four for 1,754, McDuffie County had two for 1,640 and Jefferson County had one for 1,573. All other area counties reported no new cases. There were no new deaths reported in the Augusta area. The death toll stands at 1,027. Doctors Hospital of Augusta dropped another in-house patient and has seven, according to spokesman Kaden Jacobs. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control reported 641 new cases for 474,999 and 13 deaths to reach 8,208. Aiken County had 12 cases for 12,670 and Edgefield County had seven for 2,532. Neither had any additional deaths to remain at 176 and 28 respectively. ....
A whimsical pinwheel toy can brighten the eyes of a child while he or she plays with it but for two Family YMCAs of Greater Augusta, the pinwheel is serving as a symbol of tragedy that has struck many of its local families – child abuse. With April being Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Aiken County Family YMCA and the Wilson Family YMCA in Augusta are displaying one pinwheel for each case of substantiated child abuse in the area in 2020. The Aiken location has 418 pinwheels for cases in Aiken and Barnwell counties while the Augusta location has 682 for Burke, Columbia, McDuffie and Richmond counties ....
Representatives from the Augusta NAACP also called on changes to the law at the protest at Washington and Berckmans roads. The bill, political action chair Jorae Jenkins said, makes it difficult for people to vote because of changes to absentee ballots. Moving the Masters is not necessarily the goal, she said, but for corporations to remove sponsorships. Other major organizations have come out and take a stand against this bill, she said. It would be nice to see people that are here that are sponsors to do the same thing and that they agree that this bill is not right and we have to take a stand. ....

The state had 1,280 new cases for 827,397 and reported 68 deaths for 15,594. Richmond County had 20 cases for 10,590 and Columbia County reported 13 for 10,590. Burke County had six for 1,685, while McDuffie and Jefferson counties each reported one for 1,585 and 1,545 respectively. Glascock County dropped one case for 139. Three people died in Richmond County, bring its death toll to 362. Two deaths were reported in Columbia County to increase its toll to 154. One person died in Burke County, its 32 victim. One death in Aiken County was reassigned elsewhere and the area death toll stands at 952. ....
It s been a busy week for 14-year-old Brittany Joiner. The Valentine s Day season saw a big increase in sales for her business, Britt s Bakery. But it didn t make her wallet grow – just her heart. It all began almost four years ago when Violet and Arwen Bargeron were injured in an accident involving a drunk driver. Brittany began selling baked goods to help raise money for the family s medical expenses. Now, the amateur chef is spreading the love to other local organizations including the Augusta Dream Center, the Ronald McDonald House and the Columbia County Animal Shelter. She also sends proceeds to a village in Uganda. ....
