Posted May 14, 2021
St. Gabriel Parish in Philadelphia’s Grays Ferry section got an early start on summer fun with a eucharistic procession, May crowning and picnic in the church’s large yard.
The May 2 gathering followed a 10 a.m. Mass at which the parish unveiled a new shrine to Venerable Matt Talbot, a favorite patron among parishioners and those served by adjacent Our House Ministries.

A new legal decision against a proposed safe injection site in Philadelphia is being welcomed by several area faithful.
On Tuesday, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the nonprofit Safehouse would violate the federal “crack house” statute (part of the 1986 Anti-Drug Abuse Act) by opening a facility for supervised intravenous consumption of illegal drugs.
“It is a correct statement by the court,” said bioethicist Steven Bozza, director of the archdiocesan Office for Life and Family.
“Thank God for this victory,” said Father Douglas McKay, founder and chaplain of Our House Ministries, a Catholic-based recovery outreach in the Grays Ferry section of the city. “We shouldn’t be going in the direction of safe injection sites. It’s a form of euthanasia.” ....

Rethinking New Year’s resolutions can increase the chances you’ll actually keep them, said a number of area clergy and faithful.
Starting off the calendar year with the intention to do better “can be an activity of deep humility,” said Father Stephen DeLacy, director of the Office for Vocations to the Diocesan Priesthood at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood.
However, he added, “I wonder if our humility goes far enough,” noting that many draw up lists of  “excessive” aims that are “almost always a recipe for failure.”
Instead, “we need to recognize that we (should) start off small,” said Father DeLacy. ....
