J&K DDC poll results: Gupkar alliance maintains lead; BJP ahead in 18 seats


The seven-party Gupkar alliance led by Farooq Abdullah was ahead in the seat tally in the maiden District Development Council polls in Jammu and Kashmir by winning or leading in 112 seats out of 280 on Tuesday, followed by the BJP which had won 52 seats, including three in the Kashmir valley for the first time, and was frontrunner in 18.
The People s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) has bagged 82 seats and is leading in 30. Thirty-eight Independents, mainly disgruntled leaders from all political parties, have been declared winners and the same number are leading in other seats.
The Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) put up a dismal performance by bagging seven seats and leading in another five. The Congress has so far won 19 seats and is leading in nine other council seats. ....

JAMMU, Dec 22: Riding high on the wave of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah for abrogation of special status of Jammu and Kashmir leading to total integration of erstwhile State with India and very effective campaigning by several Union Ministers and national leaders, the BJP tonight won clear majority in six District Development Councils (DDCs) out of total 10 in Jammu and emerged as a major power in the region bagging 72 out of 140 DDC seats while the Congress was relegated to third spot with just 17 seats even behind 24 of National Conference and 20 by the Independents. Newly floated Jammu Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) which was contesting its first election captured three seats while Jammu and Kashmir Nationalist Panthers Party (JKNPP) suffered humiliating defeat by getting just two seats. J&K DDC polls: PAGD bags 99 seats, BJP emerges as single largest party


Former BJP minister Shakti Raj Parihar lost the District Development Council (DDC) election from two constituencies in Doda district despite his party emerging as the single largest party in Jammu and Kashmir in the first election after abrogation of the special status and downgrading of the erstwhile state into a Union Territory last year.
The People s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), an amalgam of seven mainstream parties including National Conference and PDP which have come together to seek restoration of the special status, was leading the result tally late Tuesday night by winning 99 seats against 77 won by the BJP.
Independent candidates won 45 seats till the filing of this report. ....
