Cohoes City Council Passes Norlite Tax Assessment

The Cohoes Common Council has passed a local law putting a levy on the income received by Norlite for its treatment and disposal of hazardous waste.
Cohoes Mayor Bill Keeler says Local Law 5 imposes a 4 percent assessment on gross receipts of any hazardous waste facility in the city.
New York State Environmental Conservation law allows a host community to impose an annual assessment of up to 4% on the gross receipts of any commercial Hazardous Waste Facility located in the municipality.
Keeler says the city continues its scrutiny of Norlite s operations after discovering earlier this year that toxic firefighting foam was being burned in its kiln. ....

New Rule: Treated Wood Not Accepted at Local Waste Disposal Sites after Dec. 31

A new rule, effective January 1, 2021, will no longer allow the landfill disposal of treated wood waste wood that has been treated with chemical preservatives that pose a risk to human health and the environment.
A news release from the Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services this morning stated that transfer station employees have been instructed by the state to reject any treated wood waste after Dec. 31, 2020, and households and businesses will be required to dispose of treated wood as hazardous waste after that time.
Treated wood waste comes from old wood that has been treated with chemical preservatives. These chemicals help protect the wood from insect attack and fungal decay while it’s being used. Fence posts, sill plates, landscape timbers, pilings, guardrails and decking are examples of chemically treated wood. TWW contains hazard ....
