From pipes to drums proves worthwhile for Timaru teenager

Savanna went along and tried out as a piper.
“The piping was difficult, I didn’t have enough breath to get to it. I lasted a couple of months and went onto drums. A couple of tutors helped me with Tiffany Gilchrist my main tutor.”
She has not looked back.
“There’s a lot of hard work and practice, but I’m not performing with the South Canterbury band during the competition season because I’m so busy with sports, rowing in summer and netball in the winter.”
In 2019, Savanna was invited to join the Nelson-based Celtic Pipe Band which travelled to Scotland and competed in a grade 2 competition in Glasgow. ....

Leaders and service men and women have paid tribute to the sacrifices of veterans and the strength of Australians at Anzac Day commemorations across the country.
Crowds gathered in the dark in greater numbers than last year, when the beginnings of the coronavirus pandemic saw people gather in driveways and front yards rather than at packed dawn services.

Brisbane City Council will no longer be responsible for Anzac Square under new legislation handing care of the revered city space to the state government.
Under the changes, introduced to Parliament on Thursday, the government will take over the square from July next year via a new Queensland Veteransâ Council.
Brisbaneâs Anzac Square will now be overseen by a new Queensland Veteransâ Council for the state government.
