HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) Approximately 300 Houston ISD employees received the first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine Saturday as district leaders plan for teachers to eventually be included. The vaccinations were given to workers who were pre-approved and included educators 65 and older with certain medical conditions, school police officers, nurses and clinical staff. At Thursday night s HISD board meeting, administrators said nurses at schools across the district were starting to get their COVID-19 vaccines and would be trained on how to administer doses. HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) As the coronavirus vaccine rollout continues, Houston Independent School District is working on a plan to vaccinate its teachers. At Thursday night s board meeting, the district announced that nurses at schools across the district are starting to get their COVID-19 vaccines. The vaccination process started last week, and was specifically for nurses and other school first responders, like campus police officers. Interim Superintendent Granita Lathan says they ve been working closely with the Houston Health Department to coordinate a rollout plan. Right now, school nurses are being trained on how to administer the shot so they can start giving the vaccine to teachers and other school staff when more become available. ....
Houston ISD trustees won a round in court Wednesday when in a 2-1 vote, the Third District Court of Appeals upheld a temporary injunction barring Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath from ousting the HISD board and replacing it with one of his own choosing. The justices voting to uphold the injunction Republican Chief Justice Jeff Rose and Democrat Grisela D. Triana who wrote the majority opinion said that Morath hadn t followed his agency s own rules before declaring he was ready to move in to wipe the slate clean with his own appointments. Republican Justice Thomas J. Baker disagreed and issued a dissenting opinion, saying he thought Morath was justified in his actions and working within the state regulations as written. ....
