HOI United Way Raises $9.1M During 2020 Campaign

Even amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Greater Peoria area turned out to donate to the Heart of Illinois United Way s annual campaign.
We raised over $9.1 million, said Heart of Illinois United Way President Jennifer Zammuto. And with COVID and everything that happened over the past year, it s a testament to the generosity and thoughtfulness of this community.
The not-for-profit coalition has expanded its relief efforts during the pandemic, with the 211 Information and Referral Service seeing a 200 percent spike in usage since March of last year, when the first COVID-19 case was reported regionally.
That includes a 60 percent increase in food requests, and 30 percent increase in housing assistance referral requests. ....

Peoria area groups move homeless from under a highway bridge to a hotel

The effort to move people out of a homeless enclave under the Murray Baker Bridge and into warm, semi-permanent housing is exciting and something that hasn t been seen before here in the Peoria area.
That s the word from Kate Green, the head of the Home for All Continuum of Care, which is the clearinghouse agency for groups that help those who live on the street or in the area s shelters.
By the end of the the day Monday, more than a dozen of the 20 or so people who made the encampment their home had been moved to an area hotel which had agreed to accept the camp denizens. There are a handful of people left at the settlement who will likely be moved within a day. ....

PEORIA, Ill. A multi-organizational effort is underway to transition the approximated 20 homeless people living in the I-74 bridge encampment to permanent shelter.
Spearheaded by the Home for All Continuum of Care, the City of Peoria was providing CARES Act funding via the Emergency Solutions Grant, while Phoenix Community Development Services was providing leads to permanent housing and on-site case management to help determine the best housing situation for the individuals.
While permanent housing is found for the individuals, a local hotel is providing rooms in the interim.
“The end goal, here, is to certainly move these individuals into a permanent housing solution,” said Continuum of Care Executive Director Kate Green. ....

Peoria area homeless advocates ask donors to contact them before giving

Those who work with the homeless want to thank the Peoria area for its generosity so far this year. But they stress, please do so responsibly.
It’s not that we don’t want people to donate. We love the generosity and the caring, but we don t want to make more problems for the camp, said Kshe Bernard, one of the co-founders of LULA Peoria, a registered not-for-profit street-outreach group that goes every day to help those men and women who lived on the the city s streets.
Why is being ‘overrun with resources a concern?
During their trips to and from the encampment under the Murray Baker Bridge, the city s most visible and largest site of non-sheltered homeless people, Bernard says she s found loafers, women s flipflops, dress shirts and four whole rotisserie chickens. ....
