Study examines m6A regulators and m6A-related genes through integrated bioinformatic analysis

Study examines m6A regulators and m6A-related genes through integrated bioinformatic analysis
Announcing a new article publication for
BIO Integration journal. In this article the authors Jingdun Xie, Zhenhua Qi, Xiaolin Luo, Fang Yan, Wei Xing, Weian Zeng, Dongtai Chen and Qiang Li; from Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China discuss integration analysis of m6A regulators and m6A-related genes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) RNA methylation of eukaryotic mRNA is involved in the progression of various tumors. This study comprehensively analyzed m6A regulators and m6A-related genes through an integrated bioinformatic analysis, including expression, clustering, protein-protein interaction, and prognosis, thus providing novel insights into the roles of m6A regulators and m6A-related genes in HCC. ....

Sugar-sweetened soda intake associated with increased risk of mortality among breast cancer patients

Sugar-sweetened soda intake associated with increased risk of mortality among breast cancer patients
New research from the University at Buffalo suggests that breast cancer patients who drink sugar-sweetened beverages regularly are at increased risk for death from any cause and breast cancer in particular.
Compared to women who never or rarely drank non-diet soda, those who reported drinking non-diet soda five times or more per week had a 62% higher likelihood of dying from any causes, and were 85% more likely to die from breast cancer specifically. The findings were published online ahead of print March 2 in
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. ....

Inflammation linked to intensity of tobacco smoking among HIV-positive people

Inflammation linked to intensity of tobacco smoking among HIV-positive people
Inflammation in the body has been linked to the intensity of tobacco smoking among people with HIV, according to a team of University of Massachusetts Amherst researchers.
Krishna Poudel, associate professor of community health education in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences, and colleagues reported positive linear relationships between intensity, duration and pack-years of smoking and inflammation in HIV-positive people. They believe it to be the first, more thorough examination of specific smoking-related variables with the levels of inflammation in this group, while also taking into account highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and other important factors. ....

New biosensor measures extracellular hydrogen peroxide levels with nanometer-resolution

New biosensor measures extracellular hydrogen peroxide levels with nanometer-resolution
Several processes in the human body are regulated by biochemical reactions involving hydrogen peroxide (H
2O
2).
2O
2 is generally toxic because of its oxidant character. The latter means that it converts (oxidizes) biochemical molecules like proteins and DNA.
The oxidizing property of H
2O
2 is of potential therapeutic relevance for cancer, though: deliberately causing tumor cells to increase their H
2O
2 concentration would be a way to destroy them. In light of this, but also for monitoring pathologies associated with H
2O
2 overproduction, it is crucial to have a means to reliably quantify hydrogen peroxide concentrations in the extracellular environment. ....
