Among a large sample of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, researchers found that a genetic variant – caused by an amino acid substitution from valine to methionine – is associated with a reduced chance of severe disease.
Infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of COVID-19, can have a diverse range of effects on people. Some people develop no symptoms; some have mild fever, sore throat, among other symptoms; whereas in others, the infection becomes more severe and often fatal.
Apart from age, gender, and other diseases, genetics has also emerged as another determinant of COVID-19 severity. Genetic variants involved in the regulation of interferon immunity are associated with severe COVID-19. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified several genetic groups associated with severe COVID-19. ....

New technique helps image biological samples at the microscopic level
Researchers have developed a spectroscopic microscope to enable optical measurements of molecular conformations and orientations in biological samples. The novel measurement technique allows researchers to image biological samples at the microscopic level more quickly and accurately.
The new instrument is based on the discrete frequency infrared spectroscopic imaging technique developed by researchers at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
This project is about bringing the study of molecular chirality into the microscopic domain.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The presence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in individuals who contracted COVID-19 has been well documented.
Research suggests that in the majority of cases, anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies can persist for six months or more in those who recover from COVID-19. However, reinfection has also be observed in many individuals across all age groups. Further, the severity of the infection was also found to vary across cases.
With regard to SARS-CoV-2 reinfection cases, not many studies are available on viral characteristics, degree of sequence heterogeneity, and the point of mutation.
