Surat: Fear of Covid seemed to have lost its sting among the criminal minded during the the second wave unlike in the first wave of the pandemic. While there was considerable drop in the number of gambling and prohibition cases during lockdown and fear of killer virus during 2020 in the city, the number of cases this time around has gone back to 2019’s pre-Covid times. Cocking a snook at social distancing norms, gambling activities never ceased in the city. Compared to 355 gambling cases in January to May 2019, police registered 390 cases this year for the same period. In these cases, 2,018 accused were arrested against 2,110 in 2019. ....

Surat: In first major economic offence investigation, Economic Offence Cell (EOC) of the city police recovered 200 cars worth Rs 4.5 crore that were sold by an accused after hiring these as taxis. Police said total 264 cars were stolen. Cops are now speeding the process to ensure that rightful owners get back their vehicles. The stolen cars were recovered in less than a month’s time. Police arrested accused Ketul Parmar from Botad on June 7, two days after an offence was registered against him. During investigation, police identified people who purchased these stolen cars and recovered them. The vehicles were sold in different districts of Gujarat and Maharashtra in less than half the actual price of the vehicle. ....
Cops returning bag to its owner Mittal Umiyagar(C) SURAT: Alert traffic police team at Bhatar crossroads recovered a bag containing Rs 1 lakh in cash and returned it to its rightful owner on Thursday. The team, comprising Kailash Bhagwatbhai, head constable, Baldevji Raghuji, lok rakshak, Dinesh Patel and Rahul Bahiram, both Traffic Regulation Brigade (TRB) jawans, was felicitated by city police commissioner Ajay Tomar for their exemplary service. In the incident, Mittal Umiyagar, a resident of Althan, was riding her moped when she accidentally dropped her bag. Unaware of it, she continued driving her moped but cops spotted the bag and recovered it. They checked its contents and found her contact details. Finding that the the bag contained Rs 1 lakh, they submitted it to Athwagate police chowki. ....
