Surat: Fear of Covid seemed to have lost its sting among the criminal minded during the the second wave unlike in the first wave of the pandemic. While there was considerable drop in the number of gambling and prohibition cases during lockdown and fear of killer virus during 2020 in the city, the number of cases this time around has gone back to 2019’s pre-Covid times. Cocking a snook at social distancing norms, gambling activities never ceased in the city. Compared to 355 gambling cases in January to May 2019, police registered 390 cases this year for the same period. In these cases, 2,018 accused were arrested against 2,110 in 2019. ....
Surat: A major fire broke out at a zari manufacturing unit in Pandesara on Saturday morning. The fire started on the second floor of the unit. Fire officials said that the blaze damaged plastic spindles, finished goods and other valuables that were stored on the rear part of the second floor of the unit. Workers of the unit said that they rushed out of the building after noticing a small flame in the storage area at around 6.20 am. Meanwhile, an employee of a neighbouring unit alerted the fire department after noticing smoke emanating from the second floor. “When we reached, fire and thick smoke had engulfed a large part of the second floor. We entered the floor and started fire-fighting,” said Krishna Mod, fire officer of Man Darwaja fire station. Six officers and other firemen from four fire stations took three hours to completely douse the blaze. Surat: A dairy parlour in the posh locality of Adarsh Society in Athwalines was gutted in fire that broke out on Friday midnight. Fire officials said that incident happened at around 11.40 pm at the Jalaram Dairy located near SMC’s Athwa zone office. Locals noticed smoke coming out of the shop and alerted the owner and the fire department. Firemen from Majura Gate and Man Darwaja stations were pressed into service. “After breaking the shutters, we encountered a lot of smoke. But we managed to douse the blaze in half-an-hour,” said Maruti Sonwane, station officer. “A short-circuit might have started the fire. The furniture and electronic appliances were damaged due to the fire,” said Sonwane. ....
