Law360 (April 12, 2021, 7:06 PM EDT) The developer of a potential upstate New York hydroelectric project withdrew its permit request from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission due to the social impact the proposed project reservoirs would cause, according to a letter from the company.
The withdrawal came amid hundreds of comments pouring into FERC s docket urging the commission to nip in the bud Premium Energy Holdings LLC s application for a preliminary permit for its Ashokan Pumped Storage Project in the Catskills. Opponents argued the project would compromise a major New York City drinking water source and that local governments opposition would have doomed the project anyway.. ....

Opponents Hail Withdrawal Of Proposed Ashokan Hydroelectric Project

A company that sought to build a hydroelectric facility using the Ashokan Reservoir in the Catskills has withdrawn its proposal, citing strong opposition as one reason. While the company intends to propose a similar project elsewhere in the New York City watershed, opponents are celebrating news of the Ashokan project’s demise.
In an April 12 letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, California-based Premium Energy Holdings Managing Director Victor Rojas said the company would withdraw its preliminary permit application for the Ashokan Pumped Storage Project.
“Well, right now we decided to just say, close the Ashokan initial project, the way it was presented to FERC in the application and just to start all over again, first, with the consulting with the communities and doing all the legwork first with the New York City and everybody else that are the main stakeholders,” Rojas says. ....

BELSANO, Pa. Robert Gordon III can hear, and even see, the music inside a piece of wood before he transforms it into a finished violin.
To demonstrate how, Gordon, a second-generation luthier, twisted a Douglas fir top to a violin made based on a Guarneri mold that was handed down to him from his father.
The wood moved like a wave.
He then tapped it about two dozen times. ....
