Student Research Day Celebrates Students and Mentors

“During your time in medical school, you have learned how to immerse yourselves in a question. You have experienced mentorship and sponsorship, and for many of you your research group or laboratory has become a second home.” The mentorship theme in the remarks of Nancy J. Brown, MD, Jean and David W. Wallace Dean and C.N.H. Long Professor of Internal Medicine, was echoed throughout Yale School of Medicine’s (YSM) Student Research Day (SRD) on May 18, 2021.
In their welcome remarks, Associate Deans of Student Research Sarwat Chaudhry, MD, and Erica Herzog, MD, PhD, framed SRD as a celebration of the nearly 200-year-old tradition of the school’s MD thesis requirement. Bijaya Khadka builds the America he dreamed of as a refugee


Born in a Nepali refugee camp, Bijaya Khadka came to Rochester in 2009 at the age of 17. Today, through his non-profit House of Refuge, he aims at helping other new Americans find the life in America he once dreamed of.
Bijaya Khadka was 17 when he and his family left the refugee camp on the eastern edge of Nepal in 2009 to seek a better life in the United States.
Khadka, who had known no other life outside the bamboo and plastic huts of the camp erected on the banks of the Timai River, dreamed of America with wide eyes. He imagined a country free of poverty, free of crime, and full of opportunity for everyone. A “second heaven,” as he called it. ....
