KINGSTON, Pa. The gymnasium at the Kingston Recreation Center exploded with applause as the crowd gave two first responders a standing ovation.
The Kingston Council meeting was put on pause so that Police Officer Matthew Bonawitz and Assistant Fire Chief Floyd Young could be honored to save two children trapped in a house fire on Chester Street in March.
Officer Bonawitz arrived on the scene first around 3 a.m. and was told by family outside there were two children still inside. He ran in and saved one of those children from the first floor.

KINGSTON, Pa. A call came into Luzerne County 911 Saturday afternoon for a fire on Chester Street in Kingston.
Officer Matthew Bonawits was around the corner when the call came in and was the first to respond. When he did, bystanders told him there was a child still inside the burning home. I made entry through the front door of the residence and located the child on the first floor of the residence, explained Bonawits.
Fire crews say the flames spread quickly from one home to another and another and another.
A total of four were affected here on the 100 block of Eley Street in Kingston.
Two gutted were by fire, another was damaged by flames, and siding on a third melted.
“Fire was extending on both sides due to the amount of fire that was showing from the 107/109 side,” said Kingston Forty Fort Fire Chief Frank Guido.
Fire crews call it a tragedy. The coroner’s office was called, first finding the body of an elderly woman in the home where the blaze began, then continuing to search for her son.
