18,000 Australians abroad could have their tickets to return back home torn up


 
National Cabinet’s decision to half the number of incoming arrivals to Australia is a blow to 34,000 Australians abroad wishing to return home.
The Australian government’s decision to halve the number of incoming travellers from 6,070 to 3,035 per week could see 18,000 overseas Australians with tickets to return to Australia stranded by the end of August. The new caps were introduced to reduce the strain on the state hotel quarantine programmes but are bad news to stranded Australians with tickets to come home.

Why the latest travel caps look like an arbitrary restriction on Australians' right to come home


National cabinet’s decision to halve the number of international arrivals to Australia is yet another blow to the 34,000 Australians overseas trying to return home.
But it is also far more than that. As international law scholars, our view is this latest move 18 months into the pandemic contravenes Australians’ right to enter their country.
Back in the 1950s, Australia was keenly involved in the drafting of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights one of two core human rights treaties. The treaty was signed by the Whitlam Labor government and then ratified by the Fraser Liberal government in 1980. This voluntary act committed Australia to abide by its provisions as a matter of international law. ....

From the time he joined the Socialist Labour League (SLL), predecessor of the SEP, in 1974 Comrade Barry was a tireless fighter for the program of Trotskyism in the working class, particularly in the Elcar railway workshops in the south-western Sydney suburb of Chullora where he worked for many years.
One of the most significant features of his work, which he carried out in collaboration with fellow leading party member, Terry Cook, was his struggle to defend the interests of railway workers against the betrayals of the Labor Party, the Communist Party Stalinists and the trade union bureaucracies, all the time seeking to educate them in the program and principles of the Trotskyist movement. ....
