Sharon Since Sharon’s variable cart and recycle program began in FY2018, trash fees haven’t gone up. Beginning April 1, quarterly rates will increase for at least the next two quarters to cover a $70,000 deficit. The select board approved the increase 2-1 with member Hannah Switlekowski voting against the increase.
Residents using a 35-gallon cart will see their rate go up from $72.50 per quarter to $97. For 65-gallon users the increase is from $89 to $115 and 96-gallon users will see their rate rise from $103 per quarter to $120.
Town Administrator Fred Turkington said some of the impacts on the cost of the program include the increased cost of solid waste and recyclable material, the tipping fee, which used to be in the range of $20-$30 per ton but has now risen to closer to $70.
