May 13, 2021 NEW ULM It appears anglers are ready to return to Mother Nature and hopefully spend quality time with their family this year. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports fishing license sales are up 10 percent from last year. There were 286,086 licenses sold by May 1, compared to 255,841 at the same point last year, the first year of the pandemic. So far, it’s the fastest Minnesota fishing license sales start in at least 21 years. Minnesota’s fishing season starts Saturday, May 15. By the end of 2021, Minnesota will sell near 1.2 million fishing licenses required for most anglers age 16 and older, except for some special circumstances.

May 13, 2021 NEW ULM A jury trial for a 19-year-old Mankato man accused of three counts of criminal sexual conduct at the New Ulm Econo Lodge last August began in Brown County District Court Tuesday. Jury selection was held and a jury of seven women and five men was seated. Malachi H. Rodriguez, 408 W. 7th St., Mankato, faces felony third and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charges plus a gross misdemeanor fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct charge. According to the complaint, New Ulm Police talked with a man Aug. 12, 2020, who said his daughter said she was sexually assaulted by Rodriguez on Aug. 8, 2020, at the Econo Lodge. The man said his daughter initially didn’t want to tell anyone about the assault because she was afraid about spoiling a family wedding in New Ulm.

fbusch@nujournal.com SLEEPY EYE Citing the need for more research, the Sleepy Eye City Council tabled an ordinance regulating ATV (all-terrain vehicles) and snowmobiles on city roads Tuesday. Ordinance 184 would prohibit ATV or snowmobile operation on a city road except to travel from the owner’s residence or where the ATV or snowmobile is stored, in a direct route, and crossing to and from a destination, provided it is where the vehicles may be lawfully operated. The ordinance includes a 10 mph speed limit and ATVs and snowmobiles would not be driven in the city between midnight and 7 a.m.
