Htwe hasn’t been in touch with her parents in Myanmar since Feb. 2, the day after a military coup replaced the democratic government, she said. Htwe and her husband Daniel, who live in Utica, are asking that their full names be withheld to protect her parents, siblings and nieces and nephew who all still live in Myanmar, many refugees still refer to by its former name of Burma. “I’m really concerned about my family,” Htwe said, “and also the rest of the civilians in Burma.” She’s far from alone. After the military seized power the day before a newly elected parliament was to be seated, it shut off phone and internet service, cutting off most contact between Utica’s large population of Myanmar refugees and their families back home.
