Maung Sue San: from Communist party to NLD

Maung Sue San, a well-known ex-communist writer, was one of the first to embrace global trends that departed from Burma’s principal literary ideologies of communism and capitalism. Maung Sue San is another dissent who was hated so much by the communist party members and the party sympathisers. He was denounced as a counter-revolutionary, opportunist, reactionary, capitalist roader, and bourgeoisie writer by the elder generation of leftists in Burma but was praised as a dissent, economist writer and democratic socialist by the newer generation of leftists and other organic intellectuals. ....

Local refugees speak out for democracy after Myanmar coup


Htwe hasn’t been in touch with her parents in Myanmar since Feb. 2, the day after a military coup replaced the democratic government, she said.
Htwe and her husband Daniel, who live in Utica, are asking that their full names be withheld to protect her parents, siblings and nieces and nephew who all still live in Myanmar, many refugees still refer to by its former name of Burma.
“I’m really concerned about my family,” Htwe said, “and also the rest of the civilians in Burma.”
She’s far from alone.
After the military seized power the day before a newly elected parliament was to be seated, it shut off phone and internet service, cutting off most contact between Utica’s large population of Myanmar refugees and their families back home. They’re worried about their loved ones and about the future of their homeland. ....
