Mass screenings key to tracing asymptomatic cases


KLANG: With the rate of infection on the rise, the government must carry out mass screening within the local community, said an infectious disease expert.
Malaysian Society of Infectious Diseases and Chemotherapy president Prof Dr Zamberi Sekawi said yesterday’s number of confirmed Covid-19 cases indicated a high infection rate within the community.Prof Dr Zamberi, who is also the dean of Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Department of Medicine and Health Science, said this was also due to many infected but asymptomatic people moving around freely.
“It is crucial for the government to move from its current contact tracing screening practice to mass screening using the rapid antigen test for quick results. ....

'Take extra precautions'


PETALING JAYA: Health experts have urged younger Malaysians to take extra precautions against Covid-19 and reduce their movement as an increasing number of severe cases are being seen in lower age groups.
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) medical epidemiologist Assoc Prof Dr Malina Osman said from epidemiological data, the distribution of cases is higher among young people but the mortality is proportionately higher among those aged above 50.
However, “in the current situation, information from the field indicates more younger patients are exhibiting more severe manifestations and the number who have died from the infection is relatively higher than before, ” she added. ....

Experts warn of new Covid strains


PETALING JAYA: With new Covid-19 variants emerging in the country, health experts have warned of the importance of keeping the number of cases low to prevent the spread of more transmissible and severe infections.
The Health Ministry has detected the South Africa B.1.351 Covid-19 variant in several cases in the country, although the source of transmission has not been identified yet.
As at last Saturday, a total of 21 locally-transmitted cases involving the South African variant had been detected.
“The South African variant contains a mutation that could allow the virus to elude some of the antibodies produced through vaccines, ” the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted on its website. ....

PETALING JAYA: Ahead of Hari Raya Aidilfitri next month, many Malaysians are wondering whether they would be allowed to travel across state lines to celebrate the festival in their hometowns amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
