Virginia Woolf The brutalist design of Nelson’s Civic House was much maligned in the meeting which furthered the proposal to refurbish it, with councillor Brian McGurk saying “it’s an ugly building, but it’s our ugly building”. Nelson’s Civic House refurbishment has moved onto the next stage, after the council received the business case and rehashed old debates. The business case identified several issues with the existing building which would be addressed in the refurbishment, including the location of the chamber, the perception of understaffing at the customer service desk, and deferred maintenance. The budget for the work is $16 million, or $18m taking into account inflation. ....

Nelson s Maitai Valley is set to gain a new $1million recreation hub, pitched as a destination for cyclists, walkers and families. At a Nelson City Council meeting on Thursday, councillors voted unanimously to approve the Waahi Taakaro Golf Club as the location for the planned hub. Martin De Ruyter/The-Nelson-Mail Mayor Rachel Reese said the system for setting councillors’ pay was “very wicked” after council restructures meant a re-allotment of pay including a “substantial” cut for “super-chair” Brian McGurk. A reshuffling of Nelson councillors’ pay to reflect a council re-structure has led to a “bitterly disappointing” pay cut for the council’s “super-chair” Brian McGurk and a pay rise for the deputy mayor. Councillors assign their own remuneration from an annual funding pool of $603,300 set by the Remuneration Authority. That funding does not include the mayoral remuneration, which is set by the authority at $144,500 per year. ....
