Horn lives close to the park and works as a bartender in the gateway town of Mariposa, allowing her to visit frequently. Partway up the steep climb to the top of the tallest waterfall in North America, she encountered another solo hiker, a middle-aged Asian woman with a green backpack.

Missing woman found dead at base of Upper Yosemite Fall [SFGate, San Francisco] Jan. 24 A woman reported missing on Jan. 15 was found dead the next day, Yosemite Park officials announced Friday. It is not clear why she was listed missing for a week when park officials now say she was discovered deceased the day after her disappearance. “Alice” Yu Xie, 41, traveled from Mariposa to Yosemite on a YARTS bus on Jan. 14. Either that day or the next morning, she left for a hike to the top of Yosemite Falls, authorities said. She was reported overdue on Jan. 15 and the National Park Service put out an alert for her on Jan. 16; later that day, searchers found her body at the base of Upper Yosemite Fall.
