The unit traces its lineage to the all-Black 369th Infantry Regiment, which earned the moniker over a century ago in fierce fighting that’s been credited with helping to break down racial barriers. The regiment was the first unit of the American Expeditionary Force in World War I that allowed Blacks to serve.

Built to house the Atlas F missile in the 1960s, it s one of 12 silos tied to the nearby Plattsburgh Air Force Base, which shut down in 1994.

New York Air National Guard Col. Michele Kilgore, commander of the 109th Airlift Wing, has moved on to a higher level mission at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Kilgore, who has been leading the 1,100 member unit at the Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia, has been reassigned to the Strategy, Plans and Policy Directorate, which advises the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Office.
