Alvarino joined fellow Cuban-Americans in the streets of Naples last week as news of anti-government protests in Cuba spread to the U.S. The movement in Cuba began July 11 and is considered the largest national protest in 30 years. At the local protests, Alvarino has grabbed a bullhorn and voiced his opinions to hundreds of protesters in recent days. He is in contact with friends and family in Cuba and knows the plight his countrymen suffer. In addition to the group at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Airport-Pulling Road South, dozens of ex-patriots and their friends and family planned to demonstrate in Cape Coral and downtown Fort Myers. Protests in Cuba began Sunday, and it s considered the country s biggest anti-government movement in the past 30 years. Cubans continue a decades-long struggle for freedom, especially now during the country s worst economic crisis in decades. Cuban and American flags filled the streets of downtown Naples as protesters joined others around the country and in Cuba to oppose a dictatorship that has gripped the island since 1959, when Fidel Castro took over. “It is misinformation that COVID [Chinese coronavirus] and hunger is causing the protests in Cuba. That’s not the truth. People are tired of the government. They are tired of not being free, and that’s what they are fighting for,” said protester and local singer Yenier Alvarino, who is part of a musical duo with Adrián Arteaga called Arteaga y El Yen. ....
