Will a New Italy service centre destroy Woodburn businesses?

Residents and business owners are divided on whether a service centre should be built on the Pacific Highway at New Italy.
There have been rumours about the proposal for years, but a development application has never been lodged, and a service centre was recently built 50km up the road at Ballina.
However a DA may be lodged in the near future.
Peter Blackwood from the New Italy Museum said they had been in close discussions with the developer and believed the paperwork was almost finished.
We think this is good news, and most of the community is of this view, he said. ....

Underground wells from Alstonville and Tyagarah will be the main source of water for the Northern Rivers if the Dunoon dam is removed from the Future Water Plan 2060.
Other possible water sources Rous has been discussing could come from Newrybar and Woodburn extraction sites.
Rous County Council’s chairperson, Keith Williams, supports the idea the region’s future water supply is safe without the dam.
“The documents released by Rous last year for the Future Water Plan showed three options: two that involved a dam, and a third option which also guaranteed water security and was laid down as the groundwater strategy,” he said. ....

Big changes as beloved IGA prepares for reopening

The shelves are stocked, the beer is cold and the staff are pumped for the long-awaited reopening of the Woodburn IGA and bottle shop.
Owner Tania Hundy said they had been “very busy” getting the supermarket ready.
“We’re waiting on one last piece of paperwork from the council, but we’re adamant and we’re ready to open our doors at 9am on Saturday (January 23),” she said.
“It’s taken a very long time to get to this point.”
Ms Hundy said they bought the supermarket in 2002.
It was leased out from 2014, but in 2019 the doors were closed. ....
