UNITE has joined forces with Turkish and Kurdish community solidarity organisation Day-Mer to eradicate pay and employment abuses affecting members of the community during the coronavirus pandemic. The workers’ rights campaign kicked off today, aimed at the Turks and Kurds in the north London boroughs of Enfield, Hackney, Haringey and Islington. Workplace problems faced by the community include abuses of the furlough scheme, where bosses claim the money but do not pass it on to their employees, and failure to pay the London living wage, currently at £10.85 an hour. Some employers are also failing to pay contractual sick pay, leaving workers to rely on statutory sick pay of £95.85 a week if they have to self-isolate. ....

MPs and the council leader are calling for a review after ministers revealed primary schools in 22 other London boroughs – including neighbouring Enfield and Barnet – will not reopen as planned next week, in a move designed to prevent the spread of the virus.
