Workers' rights campaign launched in Islington and Hackney

A new campaign has been launched to tackle employment abuses suffered by Turkish and Kurdish communities in Hackney, Islington and two other London boroughs. 
Trade union Unite has joined forces with Stoke Newington community organisation Day-Mer with the aim of eradicating pay and employment problems within Turkish and Kurdish communities during the pandemic.
Unite said workplace problems include abuses of the furlough scheme, failure to pay the London Living Wage currently set at £10.85 an hour and employers failing to give contractual sick pay, meaning their staff must rely on statutory sick pay (SSP) at £95.85 a week if required to self-isolate.  ....

New campaign launched to tackle employment abuses of the Turkish and Kurdish community in London


UNITE has joined forces with Turkish and Kurdish community solidarity organisation Day-Mer to eradicate pay and employment abuses affecting members of the community during the coronavirus pandemic.
The workers’ rights campaign kicked off today, aimed at the Turks and Kurds in the north London boroughs of Enfield, Hackney, Haringey and Islington.
Workplace problems faced by the community include abuses of the furlough scheme, where bosses claim the money but do not pass it on to their employees, and failure to pay the London living wage, currently at £10.85 an hour.
Some employers are also failing to pay contractual sick pay, leaving workers to rely on statutory sick pay of £95.85 a week if they have to self-isolate. ....
