it will severely impact millions of people and put the barrier island communities completely under water. joining me this hour, the acting director of the national hurricane center to update the track of the storm. i will talk to mayors up and down the coast as ian comes onshore. let s go to our meteorologist with the latest on the hurricane s path. what are you seeing from the latest updates? with each update, the conditions continue to grow dire. right now, we are seeing lots of rain and strong winds moving into ft. myers. if you look at the latest trajectory, we have this making landfall as a mjor hurricane, a strong category 4, 155 miles per hour winds. once you are in 157, you are in cat 5. they are seeing strong winds move into areas. streets are under water. i want to note that it s not until the center of the eye makes landfall that we call it a landfall. we are anticipating within the next three to four hours this will make landfall just outside of ft. myers ....
This is the part that we re going to be watching as we go throughout, especially i d say in the next two to three hours as it heads northward. let s get the latest measurement on this to see how far away we are. this is the atlantic beach area. then down to the eye. you know, right now it s about 26 miles. so this as the storm pushes up along the coast is going to brush this area here. so we ll see how that all plays out. but that s what we re watching. because that s where the highest winds are. here s a different view of it on the radar. i have some of the stations that have the automatic wind readings on it. 57, a pair of them. quite the day, you started off with tornados, that big tornado. a lot of significant damage. now you ve got a hurricane right next door. cape lookout starting to increase. winds not so bad in wilmington anymore. they re on the back side of the storm and heading out. high tide cycle is ongoing right now. looking at the storm gauge down here in the beaufort are ....
We could be talking about an even bigger wind field impacting the entire peninsula of florida. this is home for you. so what are you expecting? what worries you the most, mike? well, it worries me what could possibly happen to my community that i love so much. this could be very devastating so it s a lot of mixed feelings right now. i just keep telling myself that the best thing i can do is what i ve always done and that is document these things, take barometric pressure readings. now we re working on some wind readings. and just, you know, bunker down and hope for the best but i don t want to give a false sense to other people listening because i do highly recommend to leave because we re not leaving, we have studied where we re going to stay, we have a safe spot to stay. please, leave, everybody. all my friends and family in the florida key, you can still get out. this is really bad and please leave. let s hope they heed your advice. reed, you know, you ve done this a lot. ....
Have done have really read wind readings in excess of 100-miles-an-hour. i want to bring in ed rapport, good evening to you. busy time for you. we appreciate it. where exactly is hurricane matthew now and where is the storm headed? you can see pretty clearly where the center of the storm is located, and that s about 50 miles to 75 miles off the south florida coast a little bit north of palm beach. the center is forecast to move close to parallel to the east coast of florida, maybe approaching it a little bit and that s going to be really key because the most intense part of the hurricaine is very close to the center. as that pulls in towards the coast, the conditions are going to deteriorate, particularly in the northern part of the coast and we should expect to see hurricaine-force winds move ashore in the next few hours and progress farther up the coast and those winds are going to drive a storm surge that could ....
