this whole democracy thing is not going to work for them on the things that mean the most to them. when they re absolutely clear that voters hate what they re doing and so they better come up with a way to get away with what they re doing without the voters getting a say on it. those are all very much national political dynamics. but watch them at work tonight. and tomorrow in columbus, in toledo, in cincinnati, in akron, in youngstown, in cleveland. joining us now is connie schultz, she s a pulitzer prize winning columnist who wrote for cleveland s plain dealer for nearly a decade. her newsletter is called hopefully yours. connie, great to see you. thank you for being here tonight. so glad to be with you, rachel. and boy, did you sum it up well. thank you. you really laid it out. let me ask if i mean, i m looking at this from sort of a
those are all very much national political dynamics. but watch them at work tonight and tomorrow in columbus and toledo and cincinnati, akron, in youngstown, in cleveland. joining us now is a pulitzer prizeli writtening columnist an now her newsletter is called hopefully yours. great to see you. thank you so much for being here tonight. so glad to be with you, rachel. and poi, did you sum it up well. thank you. you really laid it out. let me ask if i mean i m looking at this from a sort of national tv show point of view, from a national perspective. but i feel like i am seeing currents of the national republican project right now in this very specific fight in you state. well, whatyo i love is that,
all-time. and in another debate, tim ryan said this. i think the problem is, when you have guys like j.d. vance, who can t stand up to anybody, it just a few weeks ago in youngstown, on the stage, donald trump said to j.d. vance, all you do is cause my ass to get my support, he said that, and that s bad. because that means mitch mcconnell given a 40, mailing is gonna do what he wants, and peter thiel give 50 million, here s the thing that s most troubling about this. a lack of courage, is that after trump took j.d. vance s dignity from, him onstage in youngstown. j.d. vance got up on stage and said, started taking xin s hand saying, hey, are we having a great time here tonight? i don t know anybody i grew up with, i don t know anybody i went to high school with, they would allow somebody to take their dignity like that, and then get back up on stage. we need leaders who have
china, rebuild the middle class. that s what we re doing here, we re starting to big buildings again. inflation is hurting people, there s no question, we need a tax, cut any more money in their pockets. that s been the plan, we are literally have a stream of investments into ohio over the last few months, honda is building a 4 million dollar battery plan, background from in youngstown, we have the old general motors facility, with fine products coming out there now, three electric cars, electric tractor, the battery planned across the street and in toledo they re doing solar. we have the new economy right here in places like ohio, we just have to keep going so we can outcompete china. that s why these stupid, fights like if you listen to that rally the other day, and i just heard bits and pieces of it. it s a bunch of gobbledegook it s a bunch of nonsense, people aren t. the people want to move on out
the democrats need to focus in on exactly what you just said was going on in youngstown with the gm plant, exactly what steve rattner s graph show, is that is forget the hype. we keep talking about trump shooting somebody on 5th avenue. he s got a broadway act. he s conning us and telling us that we re doing better than we are and that the democrats ought to have people focus on are you really doing better than you were doing 2 1/2 years ago? look at the facts. isn t that the message your campaign tried to come up with and the message that they need to zero in on to compare the facts to the con game that donald trump is playing on everyone? yeah, exactly. and you can t we can t heal the economy. you can t improve and rebuild the middle class in a divided country. and so the message has got to be, look, we have to work with the business community. look, we have to work with closing the skills gap. there are good jobs out there,
