Wilmington-area untested rape kits lead to new arrests

As the latest numbers show, only 40 rape kits remain untested in the Wilmington area
Attorney General Josh Stein s Office continues to request additional funds to process any backlog of rape kits in the state
N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein s initiative to decrease the number of untested rape kits in the state has also helped solve more rape cold cases including in the Wilmington area.
According to Laura Brewer, N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein s communications director, there are currently 16,186 rape kits that have been inventoried since the last inventory count in 2019. Of those, 2,925 kits completed testing, and an additional 5,342 are in process. ....

Wilmington-area police agencies work to restore trust with community

Local law enforcement agencies are working to restore any broken trust with the communities they serve, especially in light of recent police brutality cases that have made local and national headlines.
New Hanover County Sheriff s Office Public Information Officer Lt. Jerry Brewer said building relationships with the community starts on the first day a deputy steps into a uniform, not just following a tragic event.
The most recent tense event between law enforcement and the community was the death of Andrew Brown Jr., who was shot five times in Elizabeth City by Pasquotank County Sheriff s Office deputies while they were serving an arrest warrant. Brown s death has sparked protests and calls for accountability by activists. ....

Wilmington Kidder Street house known for parties, gambling, police say

More than a week after three people were shot and killed and four others injured, police have yet to make any arrests in the Kidder Street shooting investigation.
A party at the home, located at 710 Kidder St., erupted in gunfire in the early morning hours of April 3, resulting in three deaths and four injuries: Zieyah Wade, 22, Shamir Jones, 21, and Destiny Roland, 16, died. Zykeria Crawford, 19, Zymiryon Atkins, 18, Valery Orelus, 18, and Keyshawn James, 21, all sustained injuries during the shooting.
According to a 911 call transcript, this is not the first time police have responded to this Kidder Street address.
On July 13, 2019, Wilmington police were dispatched to 710 Kidder St. for loud sounds. According to the transcript notes, police said it Could be a loud party, or 10-40 (fight in progress) or domestic, when they arrived on scene. It ended up being a party that was broken up, the police notes continued. ....

Wilmington mass shooting victim names released, killed and injured

The mass shooting took place in Wilmington just after midnight. Gunfire erupted at a house party at 710 Kidder St., according to the Wilmington Police Department.
Wilmington Police Department Public Information Officer Jessica Williams said those injured are still at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and stable and recovering.
This is a tragic case with several young victims, and our hearts go out to their families and friends during this difficult time, Williams said.
All other details of this incident are still under investigation at this time, according to the release. The Wilmington Police Department Crime Scene Investigation Team found several firearms at the scene, and detectives are actively investigating all leads, the release said. ....
