Wilkes-Barre demolishes longtime Westminster Street eyesore


The City of Wilkes-Barre demolished a longtime eyesore Thursday in the southern section of the city. A demolition crew from Brdaric Excavating made quick work of the two-story home at 101-103 Westminster St. The city redevelopment authority purchased the home at a 2001 tax sale for $5,900, and the property had been a problematic eyesore for several years — as far back as 2005, according to Citizens’ Voice archives. The city acquired the property in 2015, according to Luzerne County assessment records. An engineer deemed the property uninhabitable in February 2020, at which point city officials started a process with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for demolition approval, according to Mayor George Brown’s office. Brdaric, based in Luzerne, was the lowest responsible bidder for the project at $13,700. The project was funded through a HUD Community Development Block Grant. ....
