Colorado Ski Mountain Trails Have Tales Behind Their Names

As you travel through Colorado ski country, you might find yourself wondering, How in the world did someone come up with Whistlepig or Pussy Foot as a trail name? You might also find yourself debating whether taking Dante’s Inferno or Hook ’em Horns will be exciting.or insane.
The stories of how ski mountain trails were named can take as many twists and turns as the runs themselves. Here are some of our favorites, listed by resort:
Davis Trail: Wilfred “Slim” Davis is credited as the first person to spot the ski-area potential of A-Basin’s location when he was training forest rangers how to ski there. Using a black-and-white, 8x10-inch photograph of the mountain, in 1941 Davis hand-drew the original layout and design of the ski area, including the existing Snow Plume Refuge and proposed rope tows. Five years later, A-Basin’s founders used that map to help secure the required special-use permit from the U.S. Forest Service. ....

Mac Smith: It's time to step down and pass yoke at Aspen Highlands Ski Patrol

Mac Smith is retiring as Aspen Highlands patrol director after 42 seasons.
Every day for the last 42 years, I have saddled up and rode into responsibility. The time has come to step down and pass the yoke. The Highlands Patrol is strong, competent and can take the weight. It’s been a helluva ride on a myriad of horses; many gentle and kind, some fast witted and snappy, some with only one speed … a dead run, a few rank and bucking.
I am proud to see what the Highlands Patrol now stands for and to see the unique symbiotic relationship they have nurtured with our amazing ski community. This gracious community holds them in high regard and with my very best wishes upon my leave of directorship, I thank the community along with the wonderful men and women of the Highlands Patrol. ....

Aspen snow-safety pioneer killed in avalanche west of Crested Butte

In the past nine days, 84 human-triggered avalanches were reported and more than 200 natural avalanches in just the central mountains of Colorado. Researchers in the field investigating Fridayâs slide in the Anthracite Range, a popular backcountry skiing area off Kebler Pass west of Crested Butte, captured this telltale image of the dangerously weak snowpack pervasive across Coloradoâs mountains right now. On Saturday, two backcountry skiers were âcaught, buried, and killed in an avalanche in the North San Juans,â the Colorado Avalanche Information Center reported Sunday night.
