Liverpool’s 1939 Abbey cinema, latterly a supermarket, has been handed a Grade II listing, just days after retail giant Lidl revealed plans to demolish it and build a smaller store on the site
The Moderne-style building, which closed as a cinema in 1979 and had been home to Co-operative store until last April, was a favourite childhood haunt of Beatles legends John Lennon and George Harrison.

Designed by Birkenhead architect Alfred Ernest Shennan, the ‘imposing brick and glass edifice’ is known to Beatles experts as one of the ‘places I remember’ mentioned in the original handwritten lyrics to John Lennon’ song ....
