Source: Wavertree Society Liverpool’s 1939 Abbey cinema, latterly a supermarket, has been handed a Grade II listing, just days after retail giant Lidl revealed plans to demolish it and build a smaller store on the site The Moderne-style building, which closed as a cinema in 1979 and had been home to Co-operative store until last April, was a favourite childhood haunt of Beatles legends John Lennon and George Harrison. Advertisement Designed by Birkenhead architect Alfred Ernest Shennan, the ‘imposing brick and glass edifice’ is known to Beatles experts as one of the ‘places I remember’ mentioned in the original handwritten lyrics to John Lennon’ song ....
Wavertree picture palace set to be demolished for new Lidl is saved The Abbey Cinema has helped form part of the Wavertree skyline and the area s identity for decades Updated The former Abbey cinema on Church Road North Campaigners are celebrating after a former cinema which was set for demolition has been recommended for listed status by Historic England. Earlier this month supermarket chain Lidl announced their intention to tear down the former Abbey Cinema building on Church Road North in Wavertree, which was deemed to be beyond economic repair. Lidl said they would be submitting plans to the council to knock down the the former picture palace that features in the original draft lyrics to The Beatles song In My Life and build a new supermarket on the site. ....
