Breaking news, a massive evacuation effort is under way right now as more than 100,000 people are trying to get out of the way of a potentially catastrophic failure at the Lake Oroville dam. If that is not addressed and we dont take care of that and mitigate it properly, essentially what were looking at is approximately a 30foot wall of water good evening. Im eric thomas. Were waiting for the start of a News Conference on the latest of the situation at Lake Oroville dam. The dam is near chico 160 highs northeast of San Francisco. The problem is with an emergency spillway designed to relieve pressure on the dam when its holding too much water. Abc 7 News Reporter Alisa Harrington is live with more on the previous News Conference they just held a short time ago. Very chaotic and scary day for people who live below the dam. This started at 4 15 this afternoon when dam operators noticed a hazardous situation in the auxiliary spillway. Theyve been letting out water at 52 cubic feet per second trying to get the pressure off of the auxiliary spillway. They then said it is time to evacuate people there warning lowlevel areas could see a rapid increase in water and then this. 18,000 people, the population of several towns there altogether ordered to evacuate. The National Weather service saying this is not a drill. This is a life or death situation. Thats what they said in their news release. A life or death situation. People are responding.
