Of Bengaluru s nearly 800 lakes, 125 have dried up, and 25 more are on the verge of drying up, highlighting the severity of this year s summer. Most of the dried-up lakes are in Bengaluru Urban district and BBMP limits, with some lakebeds now serving as cricket pitches. The BBMP reports that 50 out of its 184 lakes are in critical condition. However, there are positive signs, as six lakes are at full capacity, and 19 are between 50% and 90% full, mainly due to valley projects. Despite this, notable lakes like Nallurahalli Lake and Vibhutipura Lake have dried up, impacting groundwater levels and fishing activities.
“There are two types of aeration systems. The basic model, the cascading aerator, takes up water from underneath the surface and pushes it up, which causes oxygen to mix. However, this increases dissolved oxygen only to a certain depth, unlike the submerged aeration system. The number of aerators per lake will depend on the size and overall water quality. We are also considering cascading aerators for smaller lakes and submerged models for big water bodies,” informed the official.
