Cupcakin’ Bake Shop, a local artisanal bakery with locations in Berkeley and Oakland, opened a shop on 1690 Shattuck Ave. on Feb. 13. Owner Lila Owens said she decided to open the location on the Saturday before Valentine’s Day because it is typically the busiest day of the year. The bakery sits at the same location as the former Virginia Bakery, which was open for more than 50 years. Owens added that she was initially concerned about the challenges that would come with opening a bakery amid the pandemic, but it ultimately went smoothly. “Socially distancing actually made the line and the customer service more manageable,” Owens said. “It didn’t have this frenzy of people … but we did have a line from opening and closing outside of our door.” ....

Photo: Joanna Della Penna When Nosh posted its list of February openings and closings this time last year, there was very little hint as to the looming pandemic lockdown and ongoing months of crisis soon to come. Looking back now, it is remarkable to note that despite the year’s unparalleled challenges, only three of the 18 East Bay food and drink businesses that opened last February have since closed. AlaMar’s Nelson German will be on the next ‘Top Chef’ East Bay “Top Chef” fans have a local chef to root for when the 18th season of the Bravo cooking competition series premieres on April 1. The latest season was filmed last year in Portland, Oregon, in the midst of the pandemic, and while the “Top Chef” Season 18 trailer shows mostly maskless chefs, hosts and guests as if it were any other year, some of the appearances and challenges speak to the times, including a Zoom appearance from Alice Waters and a competition where chefs work with Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen to feed front line hospital workers. German is the third Oakland-based chef to compete on the series, the others are Tanya Holland and Tu David Phu (Preeti Mistry, of Juhu Beach Club fame, lived in San Fran ....
Vital Vittles started as a flour mill in 1976, then became a bakery in 1979, working out of Virginia Bakery on Shattuck Avenue. It later moved to its own facility on Heinz Street, and finally opened a bakery on San Pablo Avenue in West Berkeley, where it still stands today.
