Why make voting more difficult for voters in Iowa?
Bills out of the House and Senate (HF 590, SF413) to shorten early voting times and reduce the number of days during which we can request absentee ballots seem to be fixes to problems that don’t exist. In fact, they re just the opposite. The last election was a great success. We had a greater number of voters than ever before. Isn’t this a good thing enabling more people to vote? We don’t understand the reason for making these changes. The bills also seek to impose new restrictions on the Secretary of State and county auditors with penalties for noncompliance even though there were very few irregularities in the last election. Overall, the proposals will make it more difficult to vote.  I use a wheelchair and appreciate measures taken to make voting ....

GOP lawmakers propose shorter early voting period in Iowa
Iowa’s 29-day early voting period would be shortened to 18 days before an election under a bill Senator Roby Smith of Davenport is sponsoring.
“Setting absentee voting at 18 days will limit voter remorse, the length of campaigning in the state and allow more time for informed voting,” Smith said.
Republican Representative Bobby Kaufmann of Wilton has introduced a similar bill in the Iowa House.
“One of the most significant thing I heard on the campaign trail was that the election season is a lot longer than it shoud be,” Kaufmann said last night during a House subcommittee meeting. ....
