Justin Wilson and incumbent council members win big in Democratic primary | Alexandria Times

The result of Tuesday’s Democratic mayoral primary looked similar to 2018, as Incumbent Mayor Justin Wilson defeated former Mayor Allison Silberberg in a rematch, though by a considerably wider margin than three years ago.
Wilson won the 2021 Democratic mayoral nomination with 13,005 of the total 22,734 votes, or 57.21% as of press time. Silberberg received 9,729 votes, or 42.79%. Ultimately, 23.03% of the city’s 98,728 total registered voters cast votes in the primary.
Wilson will go on to face Republic mayoral nominee Annetta Catchings in the Nov. 2 general election. ....

After another financially uncertain year due to the pandemic, City Council unanimously adopted its fiscal year 2022 budget on May 5.
Council approved City Manager Mark Jinks’ proposed $770.7 million operating budget as well as the $2.66 billion FY2022-2031 capital improvement program budget, with $293.1 million set for FY22.
Despite a 2.3% increase over the $753.3 million FY21 budget, the FY22 budget includes several forms of financial relief for residents and business owners, as the city continues to confront the real ities of COVID-19 and move out from under the shadow of the pandemic. ....

Incumbent Delegate and Alexandria Vice Mayor Square Off in Unique 45th District Race


The race for the 45th District House of Delegates seat is a weird one.
Delegate Mark Levine announced in December that he would be running for Lieutenant Governor. A month later, Alexandria Vice Mayor Elizabeth Bennett-Parker announced that she would be running for Levine’s delegate seat. The wrinkle in all of this, however, is that Levine is also running for reelection in the 45th district as a precaution in case he doesn’t win the fairly crowded Lieutenant Governor primary.
He’s not alone in this running for two seats is legal in Virginia but it leaves the 45th district in an awkward Schrödinger’s cat-type race where Bennett-Parker is simultaneously running and not running against Levine. ....
