Something is way out of whack.
Isabel Jennifer Seward, a teenage driver, was fined $220 for her part in a double-fatal vehicle crash that killed an elderly Ferrisburgh couple last fall in Charlotte.
Were it not for a freelance journalist, we never would have known where to place our outrage.
Chet and Connie Hawkins died in the head-on crash, after Seward, who was 16 at the time, crossed the double yellow-line, striking them.
Seward received a civil traffic ticket for an offense listed as “driving on roadways laned for traffic.” She pleaded no contest to the civil traffic ticket and was assessed $220 by the Vermont Judicial Bureau. ....

New System Further Improves Judiciary’s Technology Platform and Enhances Vermonters’ Access to Justice
Montpelier, VT - The Vermont Judiciary announced reaching another milestone today in its phased launch of the industry-leading Odyssey electronic case management system. The Judiciary implemented the system in seven of Vermont’s 14 counties today Caledonia, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, Orleans and Washington counties. Odyssey enables court personnel to manage all parts of case management electronically while protecting the privacy of confidential information. It replaces a system that was introduced in the 1990s that no longer meets the needs of a modern judiciary. Today’s announcement means that these improvements are now available in all units of the state’s trial court. ....

Teen driver in double-fatal crash charged with $220 fine


A teenage driver has been fined $220 for her part in a double-fatal car crash that killed an elderly Addison County couple last September in Charlotte.
Public records show Isabel Jennifer Seward, who comes from a prominent Atlanta family, received a Vermont civil traffic ticket for an offense listed as “driving on roadways laned for traffic.”
Seward pleaded no contest to the civil traffic ticket and was assessed $220 by the Vermont Judicial Bureau, court records show.
They also show Seward’s mother paid the fine.
Seward, who turned 17 last week, provided at least 3 conflicting stories about her cell phone leading up to and after the crash near Church Hill Road on Sept. 8, according to the Vermont State Police accident report. ....

VT Supreme Court: remote hearings now mandatory

BENNINGTON — The Vermont Supreme Court has ordered all state court hearings to be held remotely — with limited exceptions — due to the current course of the pandemic.
The court announced Tuesday that remote hearings are now mandatory, revising a previous order that they be held “to the maximum extent possible.”
“The dynamic nature of the pandemic requires the Judiciary to continually assess its operations and adapt accordingly,” State Court Administrator Patricia Gabel said in a news release.
In-person Superior Court hearings will continue to be held in some situations, according to the court’s Dec. 22 amendment to its March 16 “declaration of judicial emergency.” ....
