Agency of Education releases modified Annual Snapshot | Vermont Business Magazine

The Vermont Agency of Education (AOE) has released an updated version of the Annual Snapshot. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s snapshot contains less data than previous releases. We are unable to report many indicators of academic achievement, as the assessments on which they are based were not conducted during the 2019-20 academic year. The Annual Snapshot can be found at schoolsnapshot.vermont.gov

“As with so much during this past year, we have had to adjust expectations due to the pandemic,” said Secretary of Education Dan French. “While many indicators are not reported this year and we did not make accountability determinations as in the past, there is still essential information that can be learned from this year’s snapshot, including trends in student engagement, one of the pillars of our COVID-19 recovery planning.” ....

Statement of Secretary French on US Dept of Ed announcement on statewide assessment

Vermont Business Magazine Today Vermont Secretary of Education Dan French made the following statement regarding the US Department of Education (USED) letter to Chief State School Officers offering flexibilities to states on statewide assessment, accountability and reporting requirements for the 2020-2021 school year. Since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, student achievement, or lack thereof, has been a significant issue. Measuring that achievement has also been difficult. School was suspended for a time last spring and then brought back remotely. Even now, there is only partial in-person education.
The announcement indicates that USED will not provide blanket waivers for assessment administration during the 2020-2021 school year. The Department is offering flexibility to states in how and when to offer their statewide assessments, and in their federally required accountability systems. ....
