Understanding Myanmar's anti-democratic patron–client network

Despite massive popular support, Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi faced forces too difficult to manage. These need to be understood in the aftermath of the military coup. A State Administrative Council of 11 including Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces (Tatmadaw) Aung Min Hlaing now possesses full power over the state. Aung San Suu Kyi is facing a long trial, the NLD is being dismantled, the election commission dismissed, and her National Reconciliation and Peace Centre dissolved.
In November 2020, the ultra-nationalist monk Wirathu turned himself in and is now in Insein Prison waiting for his case of sedition to begin. Recent events may have raised his prospects for release. Three ethnic politicians from parties politically opposed to the democratically elected National League for Democracy (NLD)-led government toppled by the armed forces on Monday have been appointed to the military regime’s governing body, the State Administrative Council (SAC).
The move came two days after the military (or Tatmadaw) staged a coup and arrested President U Win Myint and State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
The SAC, which was formed a day after the military takeover with coup leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing as chairman, has a total of 16 members so far. ....

YANGON The vice chair of Myanmar’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) on Sunday confirmed that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will remain the country’s de facto leader in the State Counselor position for the incoming government’s five-year term.
Following the NLD’s second straight general election victory in November, speculation arose as to whether Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who is constitutionally barred from the presidency, would continue to hold the State Counselor position. ....
