Ursuline Sister Colette Kraemer, an educator, died May 3
Ursuline Sister of Louisville Colette Kraemer, a teacher and former member of Ursuline leadership, died May 3 at Baptist Health Louisville. She was 89 and had celebrated her 70th year as an Ursuline Sister in 2020.
Sister Kraemer, a native of Louisville, served as a teacher for more than 30 years at schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville, including St. George, St. Martin, Sacred Heart Model School, Angela Merici High School and Sacred Heart Academy. She led the drama club in producing 14 plays at Angela Merici.
She served for a decade as the director of mission effectiveness from 1997 to 2007 for Sacred Heart Schools. And she served two consecutive terms on the Ursuline Sisters’ leadership team, from 1988 to 1996. ....

Sr. Dianna Ortiz, kidnapping survivor and advocate for torture victims, dies at 62

Sr. Dianna Ortiz, who not only survived kidnapping and torture but used the experience to become a voice for torture victims everywhere, died of cancer Feb. 19. She was 62.
An Ursuline Sister of Mount St. Joseph, Kentucky, Ortiz was working as a missionary in Guatemala in 1989 when she was kidnapped by Guatemalan security forces because of her work with Indigenous people. She was taken to a secret detention center in the capital and tortured for 24 hours until she was able to escape.
She returned to her family in the United States but was so traumatized, she had no memory of her life before the abduction and was unable to recall family members or her Ursuline sisters. She spent years pursuing justice, but no one was ever charged, and her memory never fully returned. ....

CANFIELD The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown is welcoming nine new Ursuline Associates who all belong to parishes in the Diocese of Youngstown.
The Catholic adults are committed to the Sisters’ mission and ministry, and the charism of St. Angela Merici, who founded the vowed religious order in 1535 in Brecia, Italy.
She prioritized faith, education and hospitality and embraced such virtues as compassion, respect and hope.
Joining the Ursulines as associates this year are Don Clyde of Christ Our Savior Parish in Struthers, Barbie DeLucia of St. Columba and St. Angela Merici, Antonia Ross Douglass of St. Charles Parish in Boardman, Anne Schirck Kravitz of St. Charles, Cindy and James G. Lacko of St. Patrick Parish in Hubbard, Lawrence “Larry” Lutz of St. Michael Parish in Canfield, Mary C. Moon of St. Brendan Parish in Youngstown, and Thomas G. Welsh Jr. of St. Patrick Parish in Youngstown. ....

At the Gateway International Bridge that links Brownsville, Texas, to Matamoros, Mexico, a group of volunteers and Catholic sisters pull portable carts with diapers, tents, food and supplies. They cross the border into Mexico on foot, a small caravan of about 10-20 people. WATERVILLE Throughout Maine Catholic Schools Week, students at Mount Merici Academy collected items to be donated to the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter.
As part of the initiative, students in each grade were given a different item to donate, including tissues, toilet paper, razors, shaving cream, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, soap, and socks. The items are being used to assemble personal care kits for shelter residents, according to a news release from Dave Guthro, communications director, Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland. ....
