Assam Chief Minister Biswa Sarma announced that only Assamese people who have been residing in Assam for 200 to 300 years will be elected from nearly 106 assembly seats out of 126 constituencies following the delimitation and accord with the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). The Election Commission of India conducted the delimitation, resulting in 96 seats secured for Assamese people.
Assamese people have their own, unique culture and language, and a strong sense of identity. Starting in the 19th century, however, as the region’s tea, coal and oil economy attracted migrants from all over, the indigenous population started to feel insecure.
