Benue traditional rulers arrested over murder of 11 soldiers


An officer and 10 soldiers on a routine operational task were ambushed and killed by bandits in Konshisha two weeks ago.
The attack led to a military crackdown on local communities that attracted public attention for alleged human rights abuse of local residents.
Benue governor,
Samuel Ortom, who had pleaded for a peaceful resolution, announced after a security meeting on Monday, April 19, 2021 that the government is cooperating with the authorities.
He said the Deputy Chairman of Konshisha LGA,
Sam Kave; District Head of Iwarnyam,
Chief Unaha Koko; Kindred Head of Mbator,
Chief Emmanuel Achirgbenda; and the Councilor representing Mbagusa-Mbatser Ward,
Tersugh Mela, have all been handed over to the Police. ....

Ekiti cult killings: Police arrests 34 more suspects

More suspects were on Monday apprehended by the Police Command in Ekiti state, in connection with Sundays bloody cult clash in Ikere Ekiti, Ikere LGA.
The clash which left 6 persons dead and several others sustaining varied degrees of gun and machetes injuries happened between the night of Saturday and the early hours of Sunday,
ASP Sunday Abutu, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, who confirmed the additional arrests to journalists in Ado Ekiti on Monday, said those newly arrested made the total number of suspects so far in the command’s custody to rise to 45. ....

Slain soldiers: Benue gives up 4 officials for police questioning


Governor Samuel Ortom who read the resolution reached by stakeholders during an expanded State Security Council meeting held at Government House in Makurdi, also informed that 10 weapons out of the 12 seized by the armed militia had been recovered and returned to the military.
He said that the four men handed over to the police for further interrogation were to assist in investigation that would ensure that those who committed the crime (killing of soldiers) are arrested and brought to book.
The governor flanked by two former federal legislators for Benue North East senatorial district, Senator Barnabas Gemade, Senator Joseph Akaagerger and House of Representatives Member for Vandeikya/Konshisha Federal constituency, also told newsmen that it was agreed at the meeting that he (Ortom) should lead a delegation to President Muhammadu Buhari to condole with him and the military over the sad incident. ....
