gillian slovo, welcome to hardtalk. thank you. gillian, you have been writing for many decades, but your recent work, particularly your plays, have focused not so much on your own authorial voice, your imagination, they focused on real people s real stories. i just wonder if you re getting sick of making things up. i m not, actually, because, you know, there s part of me that wants to go back to my desk to be on my own, to make stuff up, but i ve really got a lot from working in the theatre and from the collaboration that comes, not only from the crew and the directors and the actors, but actually the collaboration that comes from the people i ve interviewed. and finding a way to magnify their voice onstage has been actually really a wonderful piece of work for me. i ve really learnt a lot about it, and it also teaches you about dialogue when you want to go back to drama, to writing fiction. i mean, your most recent play, which has been on in the uk and indeed on in new york

across the world s fastest growing continent. # na na na na na na. crowd: na-na-na-na-na. # na na na na na na. na na na na na na. # shosholoza. # shosholoza! still proudly and loudly celebrated today, south africa s transition to democracy was the culmination of decades of resistance and armed struggle against nearly 50 years of racist and violent white minority rule. south africa s first multiracial elections were an extraordinary moment for the world, but especially for the previously disenfranchised black majority. many of us remain invested in south africa because it was the beginning of the future for africa, it was the beginning of the after, so the last stand of colonisation on the continent and the beginning of the after, for better or worse. on the 27th of april in 1994, i came to this polling station with my mother. we started queuing from 6am, filled with both hope and anxiety. i was too young to vote back then but i saw what it meant for black south africans to be

hello, i m anna.. anna foster. south africa s governing party has two weeks to form a coalition, after losing its outright majority for the first time in 30 years. with virtually all the votes now counted from wednesday s election, the anc stands at around 40% a sharp drop from almost 58% in 2019. the anc say the result has been a wake up call for the party. the anc has accepted the result and, as the anc, what is foremost now in our mind are two things. one is the fact that there was a clear protest from our people. our people are saying, we love the anc, but the anc must self correct. we have already started that programme of organisational renewal. i think we need to fast track that. we must no longer only speak about acting against corruption, we must be seen as doing that. we must be seen as giving our people the service. that is the message that our people have said to us and it s a message we have received loud and clear. let s go live to our correspondent cath

The decision for the ANC take up armed struggle, was not the introduction of violence in South Africa. Whites held that dubious distinction.
