Sussex County Community College NJ expanding technical program

NEWTON The Sussex County Community College Board of Trustees approved a resolution to apply for a $1 million state grant to benefit the college s growing technical education program.
The measure passed 8-0 at the trustees monthly meeting on Tuesday.
This is very exciting,  trustee Jim Hofmann, a STEM teacher and robotics coach at Newton High School, said before he voted yes. 
Board Vice President Tyler Morgus abstained due to his employment at Thorlabs, one of the companies that partners with the college to offer the programs.
With the board s approval, SCCC officials can now apply for a grant from the Securing Our Children s Future Bond Act. The act was signed by Gov. Phil Murphy in 2018 to augment what is happening in secondary education and higher education with respect to career and technical education, according to SCCC President Jon Connolly. ....

New Sussex County Community College trustees bring business, trade expertise

NEWTON A business owner and a welder were appointed to the Sussex County Community College Board of Trustees on Wednesday. 
At its meeting, the Sussex County Board of Commissioners named Kurt Gewecke, principal owner of the KG Companies, to a four-year term on the board. They appointed tradesman David Castner to fill out the remainder of the term of Howard Burrell, who resigned last fall after his election as mayor of Vernon Township.
Under state law, community college board trustees cannot serveif they hold an elected position.
Castner is a welder and involved in the trade s associations. Because the college is moving strongly into industrial trades education, the commissioners have made a point of wanting new trustees to have experience in those fields.  ....
